A new social media platform "Tooter" come into the eyes of people which is similar to the popular microblogging site Twitter. This new platform come into existence at least for a few months ago.
"Tooter" is a swadeshi social network which is 'Made in India' and has a similar interface as that of American site Twitter. Tooter is derived from the Mastodon project - a free and open-source self-hosted social networking service.
The main purpose behind this ‘swadeshi’ social networking site is
mentioned in its “About” section. It says, “We believe that India should
have a Swadeshi social network. Without one we are just a digital
colony of the American Twitter India Company, no different than what we
were under the British East India Company. Tooter is our Swadeshi
Andolan 2.0. Join us in this Andolan. Join us!”
- Tooter follows that same mechanics as Twitter, where a user creates an account with an @username and an email address.
- After signing up, users can follow other accounts, read through a feed, and customise groups and lists.
- Twitter posts are called ‘tweets’, if you post on Tooter it will be known as ‘‘toots’. Tooter’s logo is not a bird but a blue conch shell.
- Tooter also offers an upgraded version called ‘TooterPro’ which costs Rs 1000 per year.
- The Tooter app is available only for Android and the web, not for iOS devices as of now.
In
its Terms of Service, Tooter has said that it has been created for
'free speech'. It says that Tooter will make the best efforts to ensure
that all content moderation decisions and enforcement of terms of
service "does not punish users for exercising they god-given right to
speak freely."
Android smartphone users can download the app from
Google Play Store. On Google Play Store, Tooter has over 1,000
downloads and an average rating of 3.5.
