On 3rd Dec 1992 a British engineer Neil Papworth 22 years Old sent first SMS (Short Message Service) which read Merry Christmas was sent via Vodafone UK network to an Orbitel 901 mobile phone. The text of the message was "Merry Christmas". The first proposal which initiated the development of SMS was made by a contribution of Germany and France into the GSM group meeting in February 1985 in Oslo.
The first SMS service was started in 1993 in Sweden whereas in UK ans US reached this service at same year. In 1994 Nokia announced 2110 with claims SMS enabled first phone.
At Today SMS service get advanced, In 2010, 6.1 trillion SMS text messages were sent. This translates into 193000 SMS per second. SMS has become a massive commercial industry, earning $114.6 billion globally in 2010. The global average price for an SMS message is $0.11, while mobile networks charge each other interconnect fees of at least $0.04 when connecting between different phone networks.
While SMS is still a growing market, traditional SMS are becoming increasingly challenged by alternative messaging services which are available on smartphones with data connections, especially in western countries where some of these services attract users.
In June 2012, Facebook for kids site Everloop released EverText, the first ever SMS integration offered by a social community platform that is compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

- 2012 Rebekah Brooks reveals that David Cameron sent her texts signed "LOL" because he thought it meant "lots of love"; its usual meaning is "laughing out loud"
